Positive state expert review secured for Udokan Mining and Metallurgical Plant
On December 12, 2018 a positive state expert review was awarded by Federal Autonomous Institution “Glavgosexpertiza of Russia” to the Design Documentation and results of engineering surveys for Udokan Mining and Metallurgical Plant Stage 1 with the capacity of 12 mtpa of ore.

Earlier in 2018   Federal Subsoil Service approved “Udokan Copper Project Development. Udokan MMP Mining Complex” Technical Project, and Directorate of Rosprirodnadzor for Zabaikalye Region awarded a positive environmental state expert review. Therefore, Udokan MMP construction project, including Mining, Process and Infrastructure Complexes, secured all the required state expert reviews and approvals. Construction permits were obtained for the plant power infrastructure and water intake facilities as well as for the camp facilities, and preparation of construction sites is under way. Besides, the company is building an access motor road from Novaya Chara station to the Mining and Metallurgical Plant`s site.

Commissioning is scheduled for 2021, and it is expected that Stage I of Udokan MMP with the annual capacity of 12 mtpa of ore shall reach full capacity in 2022. The Project is based on flotation-hydrometallurgical flowsheet. The plant shall produce cathode copper and sulphide concentrate.

According to General Director of Baikal Mining Company Yury Ryabov, positive state expert review allows to proceed to the construction stage of the Mining and Metallurgical Plant in strict compliance with the license timeframes. “The company with the participation of major design institutes performed enormous work related to engineering of all complexes and infrastructure of the plant. The result of that work was that all technical solutions were validated and confirmed by state expert review,” he highlighted.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Baikal Mining Company Valery Kazikaev pointed out that solid mineral deposits of such scale and complexity had never been developed in Russia before. “For the first time in 70 years since the discovery of Udokan deposit it was managed to find ore mining and processing flowsheets for the most adverse climatic and physical and geographic conditions,” he said.

“Diversified group of companies USM (with its founder and main shareholder Mr.Alisher Usmanov) is developing a unique copper deposit of global importance,” Mr. Valery Kazikaev pointed out. “Operation of the plant shall make it possible to mine copper with a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method, immensely contributing to the social and economic development of Zabaikalye Region as well as the Far Eastern Federal District as a whole.”
